Ronnie & Lois Hornstra were named the Bon Homme County Conservation Farmers of the Year for 2004. The Hornstra’s have operated a dairy on 1050 acres in the southwestern part of the county for the past 30 years. With the assistance of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Bon Homme Conservation District, they have installed the following conservation practices: planted 18 acres of trees, installed 600 feet of diversions, constructed 11,000 linear feet of grassed waterways, planted 10 acres of critical area and 120 acres of pasture plantings. In 1976 they also installed an “Animal Waste Management System” to help prevent the runoff of manure and improve the water quality conditions.
